African American Short Stories
Read and discuss African American short stories from the 19th and 20th centuries. Authors include Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, and Alice Walker. Participants should read Richard Wright’s “The Man Who Was Almost a Man” for discussion in the first session. Copies can be obtained in the Oasis office; this short story can also be found online.

Art as Social Activism

This program will look at how cultural forms like music, poetry and the visual arts are generated within social movements and impact cultural and aesthetic practices. We will look at how music played a crucial role in the civil rights movement through the transmission of Negro spirituals into freedom songs during the civil rights era. The Black Lives Matter Movement will be reflected through a survey of art as social protest and a dialogue on race.

Quinette Cemetery Tour
Visit this historic cemetery and learn about the discovery, documentation and preservation of Quinette Cemetery in Kirkwood, the oldest of just five African-American slave burial grounds in Missouri. The site is believed to be the resting place of approximately 150 individuals, and was offered as a free burial site for those of African-American descent starting in 1866.
